Installing Cabinets & Doors

After finishing the installation of our bamboo flooring on the ground floor our next step was the emplacement of our custom kitchen cabinets.

We started the process by covering our finished floor with temporary floor protection to protect from damage during the installation process. After our cabinets had been delivered we removed each one from its packaging and temporarily arranged them in place to ensure that we had received the correct number and type of cabinet units. Once we had ascertained the types and dimensions of our cabinets we removed and safely stored all the doors and shelves to facilitate the installation process.

With assurance that we had received the correct cabinets and our doors and shelves removed and stored we moved on the marking the locations of our cabinets on our wall. After marking the cabinet locations and the studs and backing that we fasten our cabinets to we moved on to installing the cabinets themselves. The first cabinets that we installed were our hanging cabinets, in other words the cabinets not resting on the floor. These cabinets were installed first to avoid the inconvenience of working over a row of base cabinets.

The process continued with the installation of base cabinets. The first cabinet we installed for the base row was our corner cabinet because it gave us two walls to help emplacement. Once our corner cabinet was installed we moved to the installation of the base cabinets. With our cabinets in place we will have a sub-contractor measure, pre-fabricate, and install our counter-tops.

With the installation of our cabinets completed we moved on to the installation of our interior doors. The first step with door installation was to ensure the rough openings in our doorway were plumb. Next, we fastened the hinge-side of our doors to the framing using a finish nail gun, all the while using wooden shims to maintain a plumb vertical plane. Following that, we fasten the other side of the door jamb to the framing. Again using shims to acquire an even reveal (the space between the door and the jamb) running from top to bottom.
